Volunteer Opportunities

PERC volunteer

The Patient Library & Welcome Center (formerly the PERC, Patient Education Resource Center) at Moffitt Cancer Center offers an exciting and rewarding volunteer opportunity. Our volunteers staff the Patient Library & Welcome Center and help cancer patients and their families obtain information about all aspects of cancer. Volunteers help direct visitors to books, brochures and electronic media. Volunteers also take on a variety of projects, such as stocking the hospital wall racks with patient education materials, delivering orders to clinic areas and helping sort publication orders.

The Patient Library & Welcome Center is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteers work in two shifts per day: the morning shift from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and the afternoon shift from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The commitment involved is for one shift per week for one year; of course, volunteers may work more depending on their schedules and the needs of the center.

General criteria that must be met in order to volunteer in the Patient Library & Welcome Center include:

  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong English communication skills (bilingual in Spanish is also a plus)
  • Ability to interact effectively and work with cancer patients undergoing treatment and their families
  • Basic computer literacy
  • Knowledge of the Internet
  • Basic understanding and interest in cancer prevention, treatment and survivorship issues.
